Our take
Audio editing & multitrack mixing
Audacity fits waveform editing; Ardour fits multitrack sessions and has paid official binaries.
CHOOSE BY TASK
Which option fits your work?
Compare by the work you need to do
Audacity
Established projectAudacity records and edits audio on the desktop. It is relevant to speech cleanup and other waveform-editing jobs associated with Audition. Its application license is GPLv3, while documentation and individual source files can have different notices.
What to check first
- Test required effects, plug-ins and project exchange.
- A waveform editor is not a complete substitute for every broadcast or music-production environment.
Ardour
Established projectArdour addresses session-based audio production. Its source is freely available, but the project asks users to pay for its ready-to-run downloads. A free software license and a free official binary download are different things.
What to check first
- Check your interface, drivers, plug-ins and required latency.
- Do not assume Audition or Ableton sessions import with all behavior intact.
Migration checklist
Test your audio interface, plug-ins, routing, loudness requirements and export format with a short real session.
Representative test material
A spoken recording, a multitrack session and the final audio delivery requirements.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
For a short voice edit, start with the smallest workflow that meets the task.
For teams
Verify recording hardware, plug-in availability, routing and exact export requirements on every workstation.
When to keep the original
Keep Audition when required restoration tools, session interchange or broadcast processes have no validated equivalent.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
