Our take
Parametric parts & technical drawings
Consider FreeCAD for dimensioned 3D parts and derived drawings. Validate required DWG exchange independently.

Parametric parts and derived drawings
A limited task match, not a claim to cover every AutoCAD workflow.

FreeCAD
Established projectFreeCAD builds dimensioned objects from sketches and modeling history. It is relevant to product and mechanical modeling, including work often done in proprietary CAD tools. It is not a blanket replacement for all AutoCAD drafting, industry add-ons or required DWG workflows.
What to check first
- Verify tolerances, dimensions and geometry in the receiving CAD application.
- Test DWG-related requirements and workbench dependencies separately.
Migration checklist
Check geometry, units, dimensions, tolerances, external references and the receiving application’s file requirements.
Representative test material
A dimensioned part, its drawing and the exchange file required by the recipient.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
FreeCAD is worth evaluating for parametric 3D work; check whether that is actually your job.
For teams
Get approval for geometry, drawing conventions, DWG handling and industry-specific requirements.
When to keep the original
Keep AutoCAD when exact DWG behavior, specialist industry tools or client deliverables depend on it.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
