PDFsam Basic
Established projectPDFsam Basic addresses page-level PDF tasks. It is relevant when Acrobat is mainly used to assemble or split documents, rather than edit their text. Basic is the open-source product; the same vendor also offers other products with different licenses and capabilities.
What to check first
- Do not mistake the Basic edition for a complete PDF text editor.
- Advanced editing or OCR needs a separate evaluation and may require another product.
PdfCraft
Early AlphaPdfCraft is the PDF-focused Crafting App. The official site describes reading, page organization, combining and splitting documents. Its directory status is Early Alpha, so use that label when comparing it with Acrobat or a narrow utility such as PDFsam Basic.
What to check first
- Check forms, signatures, sensitive redactions and complex documents independently.
- Do not assume the whole Acrobat feature set from the word PDF.
Migration checklist
Check bookmarks, forms, signatures and text after saving. Evaluate OCR and redaction separately.
Representative test material
A multi-page PDF, a form and a signed sample copy with no sensitive information.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
If the job is merging or splitting pages, start with a narrow page utility and keep the original.
For teams
Treat signatures, accessibility, OCR and secure redaction as separate requirements that need explicit verification.
When to keep the original
Keep Acrobat when regulated signatures, accessibility remediation or specialist PDF editing are essential and untested elsewhere.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
