LibreOffice
Established projectLibreOffice combines Writer, Calc, Impress and other desktop applications. It is a useful Microsoft Office comparison when local document work is the priority. Its official license page identifies MPL 2.0 and notes that included components may use other open-source licenses.
What to check first
- Verify complex Microsoft Office files, fonts, macros and external links.
- Desktop editing is not the same product as Microsoft 365 real-time collaboration.
Migration checklist
Open real DOCX, XLSX and PPTX copies. Verify formulas, macros, fonts, layout and the returned files.
Representative test material
A DOCX with page breaks, an XLSX with formulas and a PPTX with your real fonts.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
Everyday local documents are a useful first evaluation. Inspect files in both applications after saving.
For teams
Validate VBA, shared templates, exact formatting and Microsoft 365 dependencies with the receiving team.
When to keep the original
Keep Microsoft Office for required VBA behavior, exact formatting or Microsoft 365 services your team uses.
Primary sources
