Overview
darktable organizes photographic originals and develops RAW images through its own processing workflow. It can address tasks associated with Lightroom, but the project explicitly says it is not a free Lightroom replacement. Expect to learn a different approach rather than transfer every edit.
What it is for
- Develop RAW photographs without overwriting the original.
- Organize a photo collection and export finished images.
What to check first
- Check support for your camera and the rendering of your own RAW files.
- Lightroom catalogs, presets and edit histories are not interchangeable workflows.
A useful first test
Develop three representative RAW files and compare exposure, color and exported results against your reference images.
Cost and hosting
Free software; donations are optional.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.

RAW development & photo workflow
Evaluate photo development separately from cloud libraries and catalog migration.
Our take darktable and RawTherapee address RAW processing with their own workflows; neither guarantees Lightroom-equivalent catalogs or edits.
