Our take
RAW development & photo workflow
darktable and RawTherapee address RAW processing with their own workflows; neither guarantees Lightroom-equivalent catalogs or edits.
CHOOSE BY TASK
Which option fits your work?
Photo organization plus development
Assess its own catalog and processing approach.
Detailed RAW processing
Concentrate on image development and exported results.

darktable
Established projectdarktable organizes photographic originals and develops RAW images through its own processing workflow. It can address tasks associated with Lightroom, but the project explicitly says it is not a free Lightroom replacement. Expect to learn a different approach rather than transfer every edit.
What to check first
- Check support for your camera and the rendering of your own RAW files.
- Lightroom catalogs, presets and edit histories are not interchangeable workflows.
RawTherapee
Established projectRawTherapee provides a desktop workflow for developing camera RAW files. It is relevant to the image-processing part of a Lightroom workflow, not an assumption that cloud libraries, mobile editing and a commercial catalog will carry over.
What to check first
- Check camera support and output using your own files.
- Evaluate library organization and preset migration independently.
Migration checklist
Use RAW files from your own camera and inspect color, detail, metadata and the exported images.
Representative test material
Three camera RAW files: high ISO, difficult highlights and a portrait.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
Learn the chosen processor’s workflow and compare results against your own reference exports.
For teams
Agree on metadata, originals, color handling and delivery folders; do not assume shared catalog migration.
When to keep the original
Keep Lightroom if required catalog history, shared cloud workflows or client rendering cannot be reproduced acceptably.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
