Overview
Inkscape is the vector option in this directory. It belongs beside Illustrator when the job is icons, diagrams or scalable illustrations. Its source contains several compatible licenses; the project states that combined binaries are covered by GPL version 3 or later.
What it is for
- Create scalable SVG illustrations, icons and diagrams.
- Work with paths and vector shapes instead of raster pixels.
What to check first
- Check Illustrator-specific appearance effects, typography and file interchange.
- Raster photo retouching is a different task; compare GIMP for that workflow.
A useful first test
Recreate a small logo, export SVG and PDF, then inspect the files in the application or service that will receive your work.
Cost and hosting
Free, open-source software.
