Our take
Vector illustration & SVG
Inkscape is the established option. VectorCraft remains in development.

Which option fits your work?
SVG illustration
An established path-based editor is the practical starting point.

Inkscape
Established projectInkscape is the vector option in this directory. It belongs beside Illustrator when the job is icons, diagrams or scalable illustrations. Its source contains several compatible licenses; the project states that combined binaries are covered by GPL version 3 or later.
What to check first
- Check Illustrator-specific appearance effects, typography and file interchange.
- Raster photo retouching is a different task; compare GIMP for that workflow.
VectorCraft
In developmentVectorCraft targets vector drawing rather than photo retouching. Its product page lists path tools, shapes and import/export workflows. The official family directory marks it In Development, which remains important when comparing it with an established tool such as Inkscape.
What to check first
- Do not assume Illustrator effects or documents round-trip without differences.
- An available build does not override the official In Development label.
Migration checklist
Check font handling, complex appearances, PDF output and Illustrator-specific file requirements.
Representative test material
An SVG icon, a logo with text and the PDF your printer requires.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
Start with one small vector asset and inspect nodes, typography and exported output.
For teams
Check font licensing, linked assets and whether the recipient requires an Illustrator-native file.
When to keep the original
Keep Illustrator for a client pipeline that requires exact Illustrator documents or unsupported effects.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
