Overview
Natron focuses on node-based compositing. That makes it relevant to some After Effects jobs, particularly combining and treating footage, but not a one-to-one replacement for every layer-based motion-design workflow. Its established toolkit and download compatibility should be evaluated separately.
What it is for
- Key, mask, track and composite individual shots.
- Use a node graph and supported OpenFX plug-ins.
What to check first
- An After Effects project or template is not a Natron project.
- The website lists older stable builds; verify operating-system and Apple Silicon support before installing.
A useful first test
Try a disposable shot with the exact keyer, plug-ins and output format you need. Inspect the current releases rather than assuming support from the platform name alone.
Cost and hosting
Free, open-source software; third-party plug-in terms vary.
