Our take

Compositing & motion graphics

Natron covers node-based compositing. EffectCraft is still in development.

Natron

Established project

Natron focuses on node-based compositing. That makes it relevant to some After Effects jobs, particularly combining and treating footage, but not a one-to-one replacement for every layer-based motion-design workflow. Its established toolkit and download compatibility should be evaluated separately.

What to check first

  • An After Effects project or template is not a Natron project.
  • The website lists older stable builds; verify operating-system and Apple Silicon support before installing.

EffectCraft

In development

EffectCraft is the motion-graphics and visual-effects member of the Crafting Apps family. Its product page describes animation and compositing capabilities, while the family directory labels it In Development. It should be evaluated as an early project rather than advertised as a finished After Effects replacement.

What to check first

  • Existing After Effects plug-ins, expressions and templates need independent verification.
  • The official development status limits production recommendations.

Migration checklist

Recreate a real shot or title. Check plug-ins, expressions, typography, render output and platform compatibility.

Representative test material

A keyed shot, a title animation and your required compositing output.

These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.

  1. Work on copies of representative files.
  2. Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
  3. Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.

For personal use

Decide whether the task is shot compositing or graphic animation before trying a new interface.

For teams

Check expressions, fonts, templates and plug-ins; plan for rebuilding unsupported work rather than assuming project conversion.

When to keep the original

Keep After Effects for templates, expressions or plug-ins with no tested equivalent.
