Penpot
Established projectPenpot runs in the browser and can be used as a hosted service or self-hosted. For a Figma comparison, the relevant questions are design components, collaboration and how an existing design system moves into a new workspace—not simply whether both products draw rectangles.
What to check first
- Validate existing Figma files, component behavior and plug-in dependencies.
- Self-hosting involves maintenance; hosted plans and enterprise features have separate terms.
Migration checklist
Rebuild one screen and validate components, prototypes, collaborators and delivery to the receiving team.
Representative test material
One design-system screen, reusable components and a short prototype flow.
These are suggested test inputs, not guarantees that every format or feature is compatible.
- Work on copies of representative files.
- Complete a small real task, including export and delivery.
- Ask collaborators to check the result before migrating.
For personal use
Rebuild a small screen and test whether the component workflow suits how you design.
For teams
Invite collaborators and validate permissions, shared components, comments and handoff in your chosen hosting setup.
When to keep the original
Keep Figma if required plug-ins or the team’s file workflow do not transfer acceptably.
Primary sources
This is a review of official documentation and source repositories, not a hands-on certification. Test your own files before migrating.
